The parents of Clinton Miceli visit his ghost bike

Since beginning research for a feature story about ghost bikes, I’ve become attached to this idea of a community uniting through the loss of one member.

In Chicago, ghost bikes are built by family and friends of cyclists killed in traffic accidents, and it seems like nearly every day on the news there’s a pedestrian or cyclist killed in a hit and run, but there is certainly not a ghost bike for every person. The more I learn about the stories of each individual ghost bike, the more real these every day occurrences have become. No longer are these ominous symbolic objects foreign material, they make me feel connected to the lives and legacies of people I’ve never physically met, and connected to one of Chicago’s most diverse communities.
